In countries like the US, damaged cars are given the ‘Salvaged Car’ title depending on the nature and extent of damage to the vehicle. In fact, the definition itself varies from state to state based on the bye-laws governing the same. For instance, a car which has suffered a loss exceeding 90% of its value prior to the damage is deemed to be a ‘scrap’. So, the sellers of salvage cars for sale, such as Insurance companies, used car dealers and scrap-yard owners take into account this aspect before determining its current value or sale price.
Also, if the car is so damaged that it isn’t worth rebuilding or repairing, then it makes more sense for the seller to dismantle it and then dispose it off in parts. Majority of the stolen cars enter the junk yard and some of them wouldn’t qualify as cars, because most of the parts would be missing. In such cases, the seller would call-up a sale for its existing parts viz, the metallic spares, and body parts etc which is then purchased by a small-time assembler or any other interested party.
