Gorham Silver History

Gorham Silver was a company started around 1831. It was founded by Jabez Gorham who was born on February 18, 1792. At age 14, he was an apprentice of Nehemiah Dodge who was also one of the founders of a silverware and jewelry industry that flourished in England at around 18th century. From him, Jabez was able to learn much about such industry. He failed several times but he was determined and found a little success as he formed his own business with the name of “Jabez Gorham, Jeweler.” From this, he was the first one to make a “French filigree” and a gold chain known as the Gorham chain. Just like any other businesses, he struggled but he was able to make himself know around Northeast when he began making “coin silver spoons.” Throughout the years, with more determination and hardwork, Gorham was able to continue with new sets of ideas in terms of gold and silverwares. He became a center of excellence in this industry which won him so many awards.
